EMPOWER YOURSELF WHO ARE YOU KIDDING? “If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.” Jim Rohn Do you make New Year’s resolutions? Most people that I ask this question to say that they don’t, as they don’t find that they “work”. But come on, be honest. Do you secretly hope to loose that extra 15 pounds, find that ideal job or even your soul mate? Even if you don’t admit it out loud, I bet most of us have a “secret” hope for the New Year. Why are we bashful to tell other people? Because to say it out loud is to commit to it! Don’t get me wrong. I do not believe that New Year’s resolutions “work” either, and haven’t made any for years. The reason that they don’t “work”, is that just because the calendar tells us it’s a New Year doesn’t magically give us the will-power to make changes. To make positive changes in our life requires clarity, determination, focus and a burning desire for change. If all of these things are not in place, your chance of success plummets. Let’s continue looking at loosing the extra 10 – 15 pounds that the years have deposited on our body. We no longer want it, as we are warm enough. So, the best way to tackle this beast is to set up SMART goals – specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely: S.M.A.R.T. Goals: S- (SPECIFIC) I will loose 15 pounds by the end of April, 2008. I will do this by going to the gym 3 times per week for 1 hour. I will hire a personal trainer to help me target specific areas and to assist with a food plan. I will eat 4 – 6 small meals per day to keep up my metabolism and ensure that I am eating enough fruits and vegetables. I will carry a water bottle with me at all times, and try to drink 6 – 8 full bottles per day. M- (MEASURABLE) For most people, a healthy weight loss is 1 -2 pounds per week. So, in 16 weeks, I will have no problem achieving my goal, even allowing for a couple of weight plateaus. I will track my time at the gym in my journal, and keep track of my daily intake of food and water and revise when necessary. A- (ATTAINABLE) Yes – it is! A plan like this gives plenty of flexibility, as you can choose which days and times you will go to the gym, as well as choose your meals. You are not going to stare yourself of deprive yourself of anything. Everything in moderation. You will just be more aware of healthy choices. R- (REALISTIC) This is very important. The plans must be doable for you. It doesn’t matter what someone else is doing or even recommending. Your plan must fit you perfectly and even though it may challenge you a bit, you must be able to execute the plan, week after week. Remember, set yourself up for success, not for failure. T – (TIMELY) Is there a time frame attached to your goal? Is this time frame realistic? SMART goals can be used in any aspect of your life, both personally and professionally. Basically, ANY wish, dream, desire, aspiration or goal can be achieved once you break it down, get clear on the outcome then ensure tracking and follow-up. You can do this on your own, with the help of a friend or family member, or by having a life coach. This is what a life coach supports people with – their desired outcome, whatever that may be. So, instead of worrying about one more thing this holiday season (like making secret New Year’s resolutions), relax and enjoy your time with loved ones. After all of the eating, drinking and merriment, I encourage you to make some quiet time for yourself to really look at where you are in your life right now and decide if that is where you want to be. Look for ways to make small changes that will one day ad up to major shifts. Then, simply, commit to it and make it happen. This month… 1. Relax! Be kind to yourself and enjoy the holiday season with family and friends. Really… just relax and laugh a little. 2. Relax! Get help in the kitchen. Abuse those spoiled kids and get them to do the dishes. What’s the worst that can happen? They won’t do them right? 3. Relax! This is your holiday too, remember? 4. Relax! Drink some eggnog. Empower Yourself – Try This Once things have settled down, find an hour of quiet time for self reflection. Look at your accomplishments for the year and be grateful for all that you have. Then, dig deep to discover where you may want to make some changes. Write these down, and then give yourself a couple of weeks or so to sort them out and to develop SMART goals in order to achieve them. Or, call me and I will assist you in any way that I can in order for you to live a more fulfilling and productive life.
